I contacted Skip Tyler and CTLG because as a new supervisor of mathematics I felt that it was a prime time to bring our teachers back together for in-person professional development. I wanted to re-empower our teachers in using reasoning routines for number sense development, developing station/center learning experiences for our students, enhancing teacher’s use of small group instruction, and revitalizing the math workshop model in our K-8 classrooms. Skip met with me several times and helped cater and organize two days of professional development based on these ideas for our elementary and secondary teachers of mathematics. Our teachers left feeling empowered and reenergized for the start of this school year. Principals have provided feedback about seeing all of these areas being incorporated into more classrooms in just the first nine weeks of school. We are highly anticipating Skip’s return for a follow up professional development session with our teachers in the upcoming summer.

I contacted Skip Tyler and CTLG because we were facing a lot of challenges with our students coming out of the pandemic. We were concerned about the students background knowledge and their ability to solve problems at a higher level. Skip listened to our concerns and embedded our needs into each session and followed up with support to ensure our teachers were successful. Our teachers were able to quickly apply what they learned to their classroom and we are seeing positive changes in instruction and student learning.

I contacted Skip Tyler and CTLG when we wanted to increase the capacity of our math teachers in the areas of reasoning routines and using data to create targeted learning stations. During the session, Skip used our school's report card data and actual problems and content in which our students struggled. Teachers were able to learn with real classroom data. The impact on teachers was immediate; evidenced by the discussions in our PLC meetings that week. With data, routines, and ideas in hand, teachers felt empowered to create target remediation and learning stations to meet the needs of their diverse learners. We have already reserved our fall date and teachers are excited to attend and prepare for a new year.

Skip Tyler and CTLG are the perfect resource for turning ideas into reality to create the best learning environment for every student. With the varied deficits we see now in our students due to disrupted learning, having someone who understands how to create true differentiation with high engagement in middle school is even more important.

Essex County Public Schools engaged in a partnership with Collaborative Teaching and Learning Group Consulting in efforts to support our teachers in the area of raising the rigor of instruction through math discourse. Within 24 hours of our first professional development session, we began to see evidence of teachers implementing the high yield strategies they learned the previous day. We began to see strategies such as "Which One Doesn't Belong", "Guess My Rule", "Splat", and more. The strategies they learned were easy to understand and easy to implement immediately.  I am thrilled to continue to partner with  the Collaborative Teaching and Learning Group.
