
Melody Clanton
Melody Clanton most recently retired after 32 years in public education as the Assessment Development Coordinator in the Office of Assessment at the Virginia Department of Education. Her responsibilities included managing and coordinating the development of state assessments in mathematics, reading, writing, science, and history & social science. Prior to working at VDOE, Melody was the K-12 Mathematics Supervisor in Chesterfield County where she supported mathematics instruction and provided professional development and coaching for school administrators and teachers. Impacting 62 schools and over 60,000 students, Melody advocated for student-centered math classrooms.
She earned a BA in Mathematics from Averett College and a Master of Business Administration from Averett College. She has presented on mathematics instruction at the national, state, and local level. As a high school math teacher for 15 years, her passion was teaching Algebra 1 and 2. Melody was selected as Teacher of the Year in her county. She currently is an adjunct professor at the University of Richmond where she teaches Finite Mathematics and Applied Statistics in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. Melody’s experience as a classroom teacher, mathematics supervisor, and state assessment coordinator provides her with a wide skill set where she has always emphasized student-centered learning.
